We discovered West Friends and their latest release, “You’ll Hate It Here,” and after diving into the story behind it, we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you.
Right from the jump, “You’ll Hate It Here” launches with tightly wound emo-inspired drum patterns and scorching guitars that hit harder than five simultaneously drunk cups of coffee ever could. The opening drum fill is a standout moment, crafting an immediate sense of urgency while laying the groundwork for the shimmering, perfectly overdriven guitars that follow. There’s a clean-meets-gritty texture in the tone that instantly sets the mood. And once the vocals kick in, they rise into a space that feels both anthemic and emotionally grounded — a perfect intersection of pop-punk and emo aesthetics.
It's hard to say whether West Friends actually found a time machine or if they’ve just mastered the art of reviving a beloved sound with pinpoint precision. Either way, the result is undeniable. There’s so much to admire in their lyrical style, instrumental finesse, and overall vision that we were instant fans. It’s beyond refreshing to see this genre executed with such precision and sincerity.
Made up of longtime friends and singer/songwriters Jordan Renshaw (Seattle) and Isaiah Dominguez (San Francisco), West Friends wrote this song as a pointed yet playful response to the nonstop criticism aimed at their hometowns. Instead of taking a defensive tone, they went full sarcasm and wrote a track that feels like a loud, ironic eye-roll to outsiders who love to hate from afar. Lyrically, the track is loaded with memorable moments. Lines like:
I′m sure you saw it in the news today
Those liberal snowflakes are running our state down the drain
We'll probably break off the coast with an earthquake
Sea levels rising as high as our crime rates
and
Palm trees as green as our weed
We got purple teeth with the wine country hippies
And don′t get me started on the beaches
Clean up your homeless and pay your teachers
—hit with both biting satire and brilliant timing.
Then comes the chorus — explosive, cheeky, and instantly unforgettable:
“Welcome, we hate it here”
After hearing that hook, it’s nearly impossible not to be all-in on West Friends. They nail the experience of watching people talk down on cities they’ve never even visited. Their deep love for their hometowns is loud and clear, but it’s packaged in a way that’s clever, self-aware, and wildly entertaining. It’s not just the lyrical wit that sells the message — it’s how they deliver it.
Musically, the production is airtight. Vocally, both Jordan and Isaiah shine. What’s particularly impressive is how each vocalist brings a unique tone and personality to the track — distinct enough to be recognizable on their own, but fully complementary when harmonizing. There’s genuine chemistry in their vocal blend, and it elevates the whole track. You can hear it especially in the delivery of:
Welcome, we hate it here
Grab a souvenir on your way out
Welcome, you’ll hate it here
You probably couldn′t afford this golden hour
Their phrasing and delivery are dialed in — from strategic syllable emphasis to melodic inflection, everything feels polished without being overproduced. That kind of precision combined with authentic personality is what separates a good pop-punk track from a great one. And “You’ll Hate It Here” is a great one. It's sarcastic, sharp, and executed with confidence. The tone walks the line between frustration and humor, making for a fully immersive and satisfying listen.
Personally, this song hit home for me. Having lived in cities across the country — New York, Nashville, Tampa, LA, and plenty of places in between you probably haven’t even heard of — I’ve seen firsthand how people love to trash cities they know nothing about. You can Google literally any city and find dozens of hot takes on why it “sucks.” So to hear a band take that experience and spin it into a high-energy, satirical anthem was a win for me. West Friends took an overlooked subject and turned it into something unforgettable. This track is an anthem in every sense — it’s catchy, loud, defiant, and tailor-made for sweaty festival crowds screaming the chorus in unison.
If you love sharp writing, big hooks, emotional punch, and a good laugh, then you’ll love West Friends. And if none of that appeals to you, well… maybe you’re one of the people this song is talking about.
With all this we became instant fans of West Friends — the powerhouse duo of Jordan Renshaw and Isaiah Dominguez — and we think it’s your turn to get obsessed, too.

A blistering, brilliantly crafted anthem — ‘You’ll Hate It Here’ proves West Friends are pop-punk perfectionists.
West Friends is the sound of two seasoned creatives turning their love for pop-punk into something vibrant, personal, and refreshingly unfiltered. Jordan Renshaw and Isaiah Dominguez are no strangers to the scene — with backgrounds that include work across genres, high-profile collaborations, and a knack for razor-sharp songwriting, the pair bring a level of polish and authenticity that sets them apart. Their musical DNA pulls from the golden era of early 2000s pop-punk while embracing a modern alt-rock sensibility, resulting in a sound that feels both classic and forward-thinking. Working with producer Tom Iannello (Transit, Driveways), they’ve carved out a space that’s as emotionally resonant as it is fun as hell. “You’ll Hate It Here” is only the beginning — their debut album Junk Drawer, set to drop in June 2025, promises to deliver even more of their signature blend of wit, grit, and hook-driven honesty.
