Tom Tippin's latest EP, "Imposter," is a 6-song collection exploring the struggles of imposter syndrome and the feelings of angst, fear, love, and acceptance. The track 'Nepo Baby' bursts out with brute force and infectious energy, making you want to dance—a great trait for a rock-rooted song. The cadence and delivery of the lyrics are rhythmic, drawing you in. The song, born from the fear of being caught in a famous parent's shadow, uses harrowing synths and edited vocals to create a sense of anxiety, effectively selling the track.
'Job Security' features a pointed beat that demands attention, and Tippin's vocal flavor stands out, perfectly supported by drums and synths. His vocal appeal is like rocky road ice cream—each bit has the same components but offers a different combination each time, as enjoyable to the ears as eating that dessert. We appreciate artists who can conquer multiple genres, and this song does just that. 'Sympathy' has a casual, lackadaisical flair with a great pre-chorus and chorus that likely crushes it in front of live crowds. After hearing "Air Quality," we believe Tom Tippin is an absolute standout artist with a tremendous arsenal of talent to share with the world.
We learned that Tippin taught himself guitar and moved to Nashville at 16 to further his career and write songs with whoever would give him a chance. At 18, he released his first EP "Teenage Heart," and at 21, "Wasted Melodies."
While we love his voice, we're also impressed with each track's musical arrangement. The range of sounds and varied feels of every track earn this EP an absolute 5 stars. Don't miss Tom Tippin's new EP "Imposter"—listen and share it to spread the word!
Wait, there's more!
We caught up with this exciting and emerging artist for “The Cage” Music Blog to talk about music and learn more about them.
Here’s how it went:
Begin Interview
When did you start making music?
I started taking songwriting seriously at about 14 but I released my first EP when I was 18. Crazy to think that my first project came out 5 years ago!
What first sparked the passion for you to create music?
A huge part of my passion for music comes from my parents. They’re both incredible vocalists and songwriters which made growing into myself as a artist very natural.
Can you walk us through your songwriting process and where the inspiration comes from for this latest project?
I typically sit down at my computer and pull up Logic and start making sounds. It’s soon after that when the words being to form. It’s incredible how the melodies can help inform the lyrics. The inspiration for this new EP, ‘Imposter’, came from overwhelming feelings of imposter syndrome and anxiety about being an artist. It took sitting down and hashing these songs out to give me some perspective that I was in my own way.
Where do you create your music, i.e. in a home recording studio or with a producer? How do you finalize your finished work, ie self-mixed/mastered or another source?
My music starts in my little home studio here in Nashville. I put a demo together and bring it to a producer. There we turn it into the the finished production you hear. I usually heed their advise when taking it to a mixing engineer. I find producers know who they like best mixing their sound. Then we send it off to master.
What part of the music-making process is the most stressful, ie the creation, the actual release date, etc.?
All of it. I wish I had a better answer but honestly it all takes a toll on you. Writing can be such a struggle when you haven’t even fully processed the emotions you want to write about. The release date is always an anxiety for me. My brain almost blacks out those moments because they’re so consequential. It’s very hard to separate my worth from my art and it’s something I’m trying very hard to work on getting better at.
If there was one thing you could change about the music industry, what would it be?
The stress put on artists to make content. As much as social media is a wonderful tool to reach out to fans it’s also a destroyer of great art and artist as they as forced to focus on content and not art. However I’m learning how to find my voice in my content so I can still be genuine to my fans while reaching out to new ones. I think it needs to be stressed more that this isn’t about going viral, it’s about finding your people out there that would support you no matter what.
Have you ever been on tour and can you tell us a little about the experience?
Yes! I’m currently on tour right now! It’s my first one really. Live performance is my favorite thing about being an artist. It’s the greatest connection you can have to fans. I pride myself in putting on a fun show because I’m out there to have a good time myself. If I’m close by, come to a show and let’s hang!
What advice would you give your younger self?
BE YOURSELF!!
What is your favorite quote?
You don’t become a better writer without becoming a better editor. It takes a lot of humility to go back and admit a song may not be exactly where it needs to be. If you can evaluate yourself and your writing you will unlock so much more of your potential.
What is the most inspirational thing a fan or anyone has told or shown you about your music?
My favorite thing people have said about my new EP, ‘Imposter’, is that it sounds like me. That’s the greatest compliment I could ever ask for in my music. If I have been 100% honest in my art I have done my job.
