"Telekinetic" is the explosive lead single from Twice Dark's highly anticipated album of the same name.

The track dives into themes of conquering inner demons and bending reality to your will through sheer determination. Twice Dark draws from the raw energy of Goth Rock, the rebellious edge of Post-Punk, the haunting atmospheres of Darkwave, the futuristic vibes of Synthpop, and the aggressive pulse of Industrial music from the 1980s and beyond. Their sound is also shaped by the intricate elegance of Art Nouveau, the surreal landscapes of Magic Realism, the visceral grit of Splatterpunk literature, and the eerie thrills of '80s horror films and novels. The album "Telekinetic" is set to drop in early 2025, promising a sonic journey into the depths of dark imagination.

We had the chance to catch up with Twice Dark for an exclusive interview in "The Cage"

Music Blog.

Here’s how it went:

BEGIN INTERVIEW:

What led you to choosing your stage name, Twice Dark?

That’s a good question and one I’ve never been asked. I came up with lots of words and word combinations when thinking of a band name for what became Twice Dark. There is no true meaning to the name, I just liked the way it sounded and looked. I also thought it might be something that could be easily stumbled upon or found, intentionally or by accident so my fans can find me easily and new fans can potentially find me by accident.

We read, “Telekinetic is the first single off Twice Dark's upcoming album of the same name. Telekinetic is about taking control of one's fears and manifesting one's dreams through force of will.”

Wow, we did not always believe in this and then recently had some experiences that since changed our minds. Can you please expand on this and tell us how you manage and control this power in your life?

Most of the songs on Telekinetic the album use extra sensory abilities as a way to change one’s life for good or bad. Telekinetic the song is about standing up to one’s fears and realizing one’s dreams. I struggle in many ways and writing is a way that helps me get what I need out of life. I can’t say that I actually believe in Telekinesis or not, I’ve never seen any proof of it but I like to use metaphor in my music. I’ve used Monsters in the past as metaphors and for this album I wanted to try something new. Other extra sensory abilities that are mentioned in the album are pyrokinesis, invisibility, telepathy and time travel.

We read, “Twice Dark is inspired by classic Goth Rock, Post-Punk, Darkwave, Synthpop and Industrial Music of the 1980s and beyond. Other influences include Art Nouveau, Magic Realism, Splatter Punk Literature, and 80s Horror Movies and Novels.”

What emotions were you hoping to evoke in listeners with this release and how do you hope it resonates with them?

I want people to enjoy the melody and somber mood of my music but I also want them to feel uplifted, empowered and inspired to make changes in their own lives. I want people to feel happy and nostalgic when they hear my music and especially Telekinetic.

We have come to realize there are some crazy great horror movies over the decades. Can you tell us just some that have directly influenced your music?

There are so many great horror movies and when I’m asked this my mind always goes. Here are some that come to mind - Altered States (Ken Russell), Beetle Juice, Jacob’s Ladder, Hellraiser, The Thing (John Carpenter), Creep Show, and the Crow. Not all horror but some of my favorite genre movies for sure.

What instrument do you use as the foundation to start your musical creations with?

I start with a synth bass line and then I pick out drum samples. I love playing with synths and tinkering with samples so those are always my go to starters.

We went to YouTube and we saw your live performance of “Telekinetic “at the Brass Rail. We do want to start off by saying that that venue is a perfect backdrop for your musicals styling and brand; perfectly on point. We also want to mention how fantastic your vocals sound live!!! There’s no faking it in a live venue. Also whoever was recording you really captured the essence of the performance. With so many genres listed in your description of your music it’s actually correct but also your music is tremendously unique. Can you name three bands that you feel are your biggest inspirations and that have pointed you in the direction of the musical stylings that you create?

Thank you so much, I’m so glad you like that video and that you think my vocals come through in a live setting. I strive to make sure my vocals sound good live, that is the hardest part.

In terms of bands that influence me right now (especially for Telekinetic the album) I’d say Cetu Javu, Cause & Effect (Another Minute album), and Drab Majesty. I love synth pop and darkwave, clearly.

The recorded and released version of this song is just as exciting as the live version. We noticed that you play the bass and you did a terrific job of making it a dominating force in this song. What bass players have paved the way for your musical stylings and have you derived any influences from them?

Thank you so much, I’m so glad you like the recorded and live versions and my bass playing. Wow, I’ve never been asked that before. Off the top of my head I’d say Peter Hook, I really resonate with the melodies he comes up with on bass, he’s very musical and less percussive than some bassists. Jerry Only, the misfits influences me in general to make music at all, I love horror punk. Flea was a big influence in college. He taught himself how to play and that resonated with me and made me realize I could do it if I really wanted it.

What are the main challenges you face as a solo artist, and how do the benefits of working independently compare?

As a solo artist I struggle to captivate the audience as much as a full band with a dedicated singer who can dance around the stage. I often add video to my live shows to give the audience other things to capture their attention. I want to start programming DMX lights as well to synchronize with the music but that’s a learning curve that I have to find time for. I’m actually going to add a guitar player in 2025 to the live shows. We’re practicing now and will be ready very soon.

I do like playing solo though because I have total creative control, and when I play a show I don’t have to split the payout with anyone and there’s no risk of fighting among band mates. But ultimately I think I’d prefer to have a full band if I could find the right people because we could split the duties. I don’t have enough time for all the duties being in a band comes with and the things I do get around to isn’t done as well as it could be with more hand helping.

Can you walk us through your songwriting process, including where you most prefer to be when you write and create the foundation musical arrangements?

As I stated earlier, I start with a synth bass line and then add drum samples. With Telekinetic, the album, I started using a lot more sample packs and plugins. Whereas before I was using more physical synths. I still add bass guitar, guitar and vocals like I always did. When it comes to lyrics, I’m constantly writing down ideas I get from books, TV, movies and graphic novels. I come up a premise, like using super powers or monsters to illustrate my ideas, and then search through my notes to find lyrics that suit the theme.

I prefer to be in my studio when I write especially since my music has so many electronic elements. I also still like to add physical synth parts which are hard to lug around to different environments. I like quiet and solitude to focus on what I’m writing.

We saw this, “The Album Telekinetic will be released in early 2025”. What are the albums roots in and what else can you share with us?

I write a lot about fears and existential crises in my songs. But my songs usually have 2 interpretations. Typically I’m insinuating that life has no meaning, and death is inevitable but I write this not as a negative thing, necessarily. I’m also insinuating that because there is no inherent meaning to life, be who you want to be, don’t be hindered by fear, or guilt, or religion - be who you want to be, do what you want to do, live the life you want to live.

I can tell you that I have 3 more singles coming out in the coming weeks and months; Invisible Man (a future pop song about the futility of making your mark on the earth), Necromantic (a goth electro song about a ghost in a graveyard pulling a living being into her world) and Time Traveler (an industrial rock song about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result). I also have remixes of these songs coming out after each of the singles they derive from. The remixes are by friends of mine, Knormalled, Drekka,, Robert Inhuman, Hororhaus, Markus Midnight and Post Analog Disorder, all amazing artists who made great remixes. Check these artists out, they’re awesome. All of this will be followed by Telekinetic, the album, in early 2025. Finally, I’ve already started working on new music for another album.

Twice Dark, thank you so much, we appreciate you taking the time to talk to us!
