With an incredibly captivating opening, “Use Your Heart” by Sorry Holly delivers a breathtaking wall of sound so powerful that the first 10 seconds will have fans eagerly devouring every note.
The album’s first track, “Earth Tones and Pastels,” kicks off with a crystal-clear yet perfectly distorted guitar introduction that’s expertly executed. When the drums join in, they surge with an undeniable force, lifting the song to towering heights. The moment the vocals enter, it’s as if they’ve been carefully carved into the mix, with reverb enhancing their presence and creating an unforgettable, iconic moment. Midway through, the interplay between the drums and vocals is a standout highlight, building into a fiery duel where guitars and drums seem to battle for every last shred of space, leaving no pocket of air untouched by their intensity. The sparingly used lyrics are nothing short of platinum, both in quality and delivery, adding to the song’s post-punk brilliance. This track is a dream for fans of the genre, truly something special.
“Dental” opens with quivering guitars that immediately demand attention. The vocals are a stunning mix of soaring intensity and calm restraint, blending seamlessly with the song’s dedicated rhythm. Just when you think you’ve settled into its groove, the second half takes an astonishing turn, dropping into an almost acoustic ballad. The raw, unfiltered delivery of the line, “I love you so much, but I hate your fucking guts,” is pure magic. It’s creative, dramatic, and delivered with manic energy, yet it conveys an unexpectedly poignant message. This moment is bold, inventive, and quintessentially Sorry Holly. Bravo to the band for taking such a daring and rewarding creative leap.
The title track and closer, “Use Your Heart,” stands apart from the rest of the album. This gentle, full-fledged acoustic ballad showcases the band’s boundless creativity and versatility. The vocals are beautifully authentic, striking a perfect balance between heartfelt expression and restraint. There’s an effortless grace to the track, it is raw, emotional, and brimming with sincerity, never feeling over-polished or self-conscious. The lyrics take an intriguing turn here, leaving a deliberate gap where a rhyming word is expected, and anticipated by the listener. This clever omission sparks a mental jolt, forcing the listener to engage deeply with the song and its meaning. By the time you realize the word isn’t coming, you’re already hitting replay, drawn back by the magic of it all. This track encapsulates what makes the album so special, it’s not a cookie-cutter production churned out with digital precision. Instead, it feels like a natural extension of the band’s essence, as if it was created instinctively, with no overthinking, just raw, honest artistry.
This album is a triumph, a labor of love that defies convention while remaining deeply human and accessible. We very highly recommend this band and album.
