Diving headfirst into the latest release, "The Devil Makes Work," by Small Town Politics, we found it to be an electrifying experience.
From the moment we first heard this track, we were captivated by this artist. With this release, they have permanently engraved themselves in our heavy metal hearts.
With an undeniable fusion of R&B grooves, rolling jazz, blues influences, and Led Zeppelin-esque sensations (yep we went there and they are worthy), this track is an exhilarating blend of genres, all while retaining heaviness and hard rock intensity. Small Town Politics are really impressive and stand completely alone, forging their own distinctive sound. The gritty, distorted, and fuzz-laden guitar slides take center stage, screeching as if they are trying to tear open the amplifiers and escape from an infernal underground captivity. Meanwhile, the punchy, driven drums thunder with precision, anchoring the track with a tight yet powerful delivery. Layered on top is a vocal performance that is both unique and commanding, soaring and rich one moment, then rasping and husky the next. Just when you think you have it figured out, the vocals turn soulful and intimate, adding yet another dimension to the song.
This track checks so many boxes that it could pass an SAT or vote at the polls. The meticulous engineering behind the performance employs countless subtle techniques that seamlessly merge to form a perfectly cohesive sonic assault on the senses. The rumbling bassline weaves in and out with a laissez-faire attitude that we absolutely loved, keeping you on the edge of your seat, eagerly anticipating the next wave of auditory delight. When the line:
"Being chased by the devil"
hits, there’s a rolling momentum to the entire song, it feels as if the whole stage is rising and falling like the tide of a storm-fueled ocean.
Then, there’s the lyric:
"The devil makes work for these idle hands of mine."
This is one of the most clever and thought-provoking lines we’ve encountered. The duality of taking responsibility for one’s actions while simultaneously shifting the blame to the devil is a brilliant and iconic lyrical twist that lingers in the mind long after the song ends.
Small Town Politics is the kind of band that makes you feel like you're listening to an iconic track that has already won awards and earned its place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They embody the raw essence of old-school, passionately played and recorded rock ‘n’ roll. Their cohesion as a band is evident, and it results in an absolutely stellar track.
