First single “Hellbound” out now!

Indie rock lovers, rejoice—Shunkan is back, and she’s bringing the heat. After a five-year hiatus, the LA-based rock project led by Marina Sakimoto is making a triumphant return with Kamikaze Girl, dropping May 6, 2025, via Rite Field Records. If you’re into fuzzed-out guitars, late-night existentialism, and the kind of songwriting that cuts deep, this one’s for you.

And the first taste? Hellbound—a slow-burning, melancholic anthem that feels like a midnight drive through neon-lit streets, chasing something you know you shouldn’t. It’s dreamy, it’s gritty, and it perfectly captures that feeling of knowing better but going for it anyway.

“There’s that space in your life where you start sensing something (or someone) may not be the best for you, but the allure of it keeps you around because… what else do you have to lose?” — Marina Sakimoto

Produced by Alex Newport (Death Cab for Cutie, The Mountain Goats, Melvins), Kamikaze Girl was recorded in the vast, otherworldly landscapes of Joshua Tree, CA. And if the album’s first single is anything to go by, we’re in for an emotional deep dive wrapped in some seriously punchy guitar work.

“It’s a big thing coming” — and yeah, this track feels like an omen. The whole song plays out like a slow, inevitable unraveling, and we’re here for the chaos.

For longtime fans, Kamikaze Girl marks Shunkan’s most introspective and refined album yet. If you’ve been around since The Pink Noise or Cumberland Falls, you know Sakimoto has a way of making even the loudest, grittiest tracks feel deeply personal. And if you’re just discovering her now? Buckle up.

Stream Hellbound, pre-order Kamikaze Girl, and stay locked into The Cage for more indie gems.
