We had the pleasure of diving into Owen Young’s latest EP release, “Town Line”, a beautifully crafted song that delivers a classic Americana folk feel, a truly delightful and memorable listening experience.
From the very first notes, the gentle yet upbeat guitar stylings set the mood perfectly, lifting your spirits and inviting you into the heart of the song. But the real standout, the undeniable win of this track, is Owen Young’s stunning vocal performance. His voice, rich with a natural grit and subtle rasp, radiates authenticity and warmth, embodying the true essence of Americana folk music. Listening to his cadence and tone feels like sinking into an easy chair, letting yourself be fully immersed in a timeless story.
When we heard the lyrics:
"Where I’ve got my roots down, a willow of a tree / Near the old mill, by the river / Where my family’s always been"
we were instantly transported to a vivid, picturesque scene. These words paint an evocative image of Young’s life and roots, drawing a deeper connection between the listener and the song’s heartfelt sound. There’s something beautifully intimate about the storytelling here, it’s a song that feels written straight from the soul, and you can’t help but feel it resonate.
What makes “Town Line” even more extraordinary is the surprise duet, a heartwarming, old-fashioned feel like the legends Johnny Cash and June Carter. The chemistry between the two singers is palpable; you can hear the joy and love they bring to this performance. This isn’t just a song about country living, it’s a love song, pure and simple, celebrating the happiness that comes from being with someone who lights up your life. When we reached these touching lyrics, it was hard not to feel a tear well up:
"In the sweet song of this country life / The sweetest note I’ve found / Is waking up beside you as the new day comes around.”
It’s a beautiful and sincere moment, cementing the song’s charm and emotional depth. To top it all off, the track wraps up with an energizing guitar outro that will leave you smiling long after the final note fades.
Next up, “Walk Down the Lane” brought a completely different energy, with an up-tempo arrangement that bursts with life. The pace is fast, the mood infectious, and Young’s lyrical delivery is nothing short of electrifying. It’s impossible not to get caught up in the sheer excitement of this track. And just when you think it couldn’t get better, an incredible banjo solo kicks in, guaranteed to plaster a smile on your face. By the time this song ends, you’ll be daydreaming about an old-fashioned barn dance under twinkling country lights.
Once again, Young’s lyrics shine, vividly capturing life’s joys and trials:
"And their world spun around and the seasons flew by / They had rich summer days, not a cloud in the sky / As autumn rains fell or winter storms blew / He and the old girl would together make it through.”
These lines speak to perseverance and the enduring strength of a couple facing life’s challenges. The imagery is stunning, you can feel the passing of time, the changing seasons, and the unshakable bond of love holding them together.
The journey wraps up with “Ontario Home”, a captivating fusion of slide guitars and Young’s unmistakable, soul-stirring vocals. It’s the perfect closing chapter to this collection, once again showcasing his incredible talent as both a storyteller and vocalist. His voice, paired with the clean, authentic instrumentation, creates a sound that feels timeless, like a classic artist in the making.
The production is outstanding, delivering a crisp, clean sound where the vocals shine brilliantly and every instrument finds its perfect place in the mix. The mix and master strike the perfect balance, blending everything seamlessly without overdoing it. The result is a raw, authentic, and engaging listening experience that stays true to Young’s folk roots.
With “Town Line”, Owen Young proves himself as an artist who has the ability to touch hearts, paint vivid stories, and bring a fresh yet familiar sound to folk music. His voice and songwriting feel like they’re meant to stand the test of time, earning the love of listeners across generations.
