This release by My Satellite, and the album Person, is a masterfully crafted experience packed with exceptional artistry. It stands as a testament to the band’s ability to produce high-caliber music and video. While we’ve highlighted a few standout tracks, we strongly encourage you to immerse yourself in the entire album for the full, breathtaking journey.
We began with “Minotaur,” an audiovisual spectacle that immediately pulls you in.
With the opening lyrics:
“restrained / choking game / pleasure unwound”
-we are thrust into an intricate and visually arresting world. The editing and cinematography are so detailed that your mind races to absorb every likely fleeting Easter egg. The rapidly plucked string instruments create a tension-filled yet addictive atmosphere, making you long to be part of the video’s surreal environment. A myriad of human, Minotaur and otherworldly characters interact, representing both the band and the song’s protagonist.
From the very first note, the vocal performance is spellbinding, crystal clear, vibrant, and expressive, with phrasing and ornamentation that elevate it to another level.
The narrative unfolds as our protagonist transforms, seemingly illustrating the passage of time and the transient nature of relationships. The visuals are stunning, filled with elegantly dressed figures that add to the mystique.
A particularly poignant moment occurs when we hear the lyrics:
“you pry into my eye / and nothing can be found”
-accompanied by a hypnotic close-up of an eye that dominates the screen. The intensity of this imagery demands your attention, making you feel as though it is staring directly into your soul. The chorus explodes into a mesmerizing vocal display, perfectly matched to the surreal visuals, reinforcing the bold declaration that they will be our Minotaur.
The song's energy builds dramatically, propelled by a thunderous bassline. The visuals accelerate, pulsating with raw sensuality as our protagonist navigates multiple relationships perhaps signifying turbulent emotional experiences. At this point, we realize we are meant to draw upon our own emotions to connect with the story. As the music crescendos, the guitars soar with razor-sharp clarity, shredding through the mix with electrifying precision. Our Minotaur figure grows in presence and power, juxtaposed against devil-like characters. The sheer ability of this video and song to evoke such strong emotions and paint a vivid storyline proves that My Satellite operates on a different level of musical storytelling.
The third act of the song feels almost ethereal, as chiming guitars and a tight, rhythmic drumbeat swirl in our minds. The visuals convey a cosmic balance, like a yin and yang of existence. The shifting vocal styles, soaring one moment, breathy the next, keep us enthralled, adding layers of depth to the performance. As the song slowly withdraws, it creates an almost physical sensation of being pulled away, leaving us yearning for closure.
Next, we dove into the video for “Denial.” Just when we thought My Satellite had conquered one genre masterfully, they effortlessly conquered another. With a vibrant and rhythmic aesthetic, the video transports us into a surreal R&B-infused universe. A character with a disco ball for a head dances energetically while on-screen lyrics command us to move, yet they don’t always match the words we hear. This playful dissonance adds humor and intrigue to an already exhilarating visual experience.
The lyrics are both fun and impactful, with standout moments like:
“ain’t gonna lie that footwork is fly.”
This is, without a doubt, one of the most inventive music videos we’ve ever seen. It’s destined to become a club favorite, the kind of track you blast while taking shots with friends. The seamless editing keeps the excitement alive, and when the screen instructs us to:
“pause for sick bass fill,”
-we can’t help but admire how this band checks every box for crafting an unforgettable experience. The video’s dynamic energy makes it a must-watch.
Finally, we arrived at “Sing Your Sorrows,” a visual and auditory masterpiece that reaffirms My Satellite’s limitless creativity. The video is nothing short of cinematic excellence, proving that the band refuses to be confined by conventional artistic boundaries. The song itself is a standout, featuring a thunderous, almost reversed bass effect that engulfs the listener. It’s as if the sound is physically pressing against your ears, immersing you completely.
As the sky fills with clouds and the ballad-style vocals begin, a tranquil atmosphere takes hold. The melodies feel like a warm embrace, urging you to surrender to their message. The stunning landscapes complement the soaring vocals, making you feel as though you’re floating above it all. When the muted drums enter, they provide a gentle yet captivating presence, leading to an explosive, breathtaking crescendo.
My Satellite has an undeniable talent for captivating their audience, and we’ll undoubtedly be watching closely for their future releases. This entire album is a psychedelic odyssey, an artistic triumph that is deeply emotive and beautifully strange.
After experiencing this album we were completely blown away. This work is as powerful as modern-day Shakespeare, utilizing cutting-edge techniques to tell a “tragic psychedelic love story that is beautifully strange and deeply emotive.” This is one of the truest statements we’ve encountered in a long time.
Fearless in their approach, My Satellite shatters expectations, refusing to deliver anything formulaic or predictable.
The band dedicated eight years to writing, tweaking, rewriting, mixing, and remixing, ensuring that every detail of Person was perfected.
We learned that My Satellite is a psychedelic indie band with a profound passion for ethereal soundscapes and authentic rock backbeats. Hailing from Los Angeles, what started as a solo project by Bryan Stage has evolved into something truly groundbreaking.
Without question, they are paving the future of music.
