Kylie Rothfield releases her captivating new single "Never Loved Somebody" showcasing her powerful vocals and emotional depth
Kylie Rothfield releases “Never Loved Somebody,” and the introduction is grandiose and beautiful, a perfect way to introduce this stunning vocalist to anyone who hasn't yet discovered her. The first words out of her mouth leave us in awe of her beautiful tone and tender, yet powerfully projected vocals. There's a slight gravelly edge and a smoothness that showcases her vocal control and immense talent. She uses this to her advantage early on, keeping audiences captivated from start to finish. The arrangement evolves beautifully around Rothfield’s performance, smoothly shifting into a soft undertone before pulling you into an explosive crescendo when the title words, “Never Loved Somebody,” ring out. When that moment hits, you’ll want to close your eyes and just absorb it all.
Kylie’s vocals sit at the intersection of R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, and a bit of country, each element surfacing at the right time, depending on what she wants you to feel. The sheer power in her voice during the choruses creates a massive, wall-of-sound effect, like an orchestra playing at full force. The musical arrangement deserves a big shout-out, as it feels like riding a huge wave in the ocean, carried high only to crash down in victory, not defeat. It's the kind of song that leaves you feeling accomplished when it ends, as if we conquered something!
When the song fully drops out, leaving Rothfield’s voice standing alone in an a cappella moment, it is nothing short of amazing.
This song has the potential to propel Rothfield beyond her already tremendous accomplishments. With over 1 million streams and views, a sponsorship from Epiphone guitars, and her music featured on major TV networks, Kylie Rothfield continues to make waves. “Never Loved Somebody” was co-written and produced with Eric “Potz” Potapenko and mixed by Rob Stevenson. The song captures a live band energy and blends 70s soft rock warmth with modern pop. It explores the complex emotions of being in a relationship with someone incapable of deep love, adding emotional depth and resonance to the track.
For fans of indie pop and artists like Maggie Rogers, John Mayer, and Clairo, Kylie Rothfield will feel like a natural addition to your playlist. Her haunting vocals and instrumental prowess reflect her rich musical background, including mentorship by Alicia Keys and collaborations with top-tier songwriters like Ryan Tedder and Ester Dean. Rothfield's talent shines through in every note of this emotional, powerful track.

Wait… there's more!
We had the chance to catch up with Kylie Rothfield for an exclusive interview in "The Cage" Music Blog.
Here’s how it went:
Begin Interview
Kylie Rothfield, we’re thrilled to have you for this interview! We've thoroughly enjoyed diving into your music and exploring your work, and now we’re even more eager to discover more about you, both personally and professionally.
Can you tell us about working with Eric "Potz" Potapenko on the production of "Never Loved Somebody"? What was that collaboration like?
“Never Loved Somebody” was actually the first song we ever worked on together! We had just met and we were a bit stuck trying to figure out what to write about that day, and I was a bit rusty after spending the previous few years focusing on writing for other artists instead of myself. But about an hour before I had to leave, I remembered I had this really simple chorus hook from a couple months back and Eric was into it and it totally took off from there. He gave it a new life! I’m a total perfectionist and Eric is pretty laid back and patient and open to ideas, which was a really good working combination I think. Production-wise, he worked far more on the engineering side of things while I sat next to him bossing him around a little bit! 😂 I love coproducing with someone rather than doing it on my own because they often think of brilliant ideas that my brain would never be able to come up with solo. I’d like to think and hope that Eric and I both learned from each other in this process!
What emotions were you hoping to evoke in listeners with "Never Loved Somebody," and how do you hope it resonates with them?
I think a lot of people that have been in similar one-sided or anxious/avoidant toxic relationships feel mostly like they’re at fault for everything - like when someone isn’t the best or most loving partner, it’s something personal and it means they’re not good enough or worthy of love. That’s how I felt for so long. But the older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve learned that the way someone treats us is often a reflection of how they feel about themselves. It’s almost never as personal as it feels. So I hope people when people listen to this, it evokes a sense of empathy and self-empowerment.
What instrument do you use as the foundation to start your musical creations with, including "Never Loved Somebody"?
Guitar was my first love, starting at age 11, and tends to be the foundation of almost everything I do musically. I stepped away from it for a few years while I was experimenting with pop music a bit, but I really wanted this album to be more guitar-based…back to my roots!
What was the most challenging part of bringing "Never Loved Somebody" to life, from the initial idea to the final recording?
The most challenging thing was that we really wanted to create this live band feeling/sound on this record even though we were technically playing all of the instruments ourselves in our small home studios and using samples of live drums rather than a mic’d kit. The first time we played a rough mix for a couple friends they told us it sounded like a live band and they had no idea how stoked we would be about that feedback!
What has been the most motivating force in creating your music in general?
My entire life, as someone who has suffered from anxiety and being overly sensitive, music has made me feel understood and less alone in this world. I think it’s been a lifelong goal of mine to give others that same feeling. I want people to feel understood and like it’s okay to feel exactly the way they feel and be exactly who they are.
Where do you see your sound and artistry heading in the future? Are there any exciting new directions you're exploring after releasing "Never Loved Somebody"?
I have been completely and utterly obsessed with indie music lately, especially indie rock and more eclectic alternative music (i.e Tame Impala, Radiohead, Royel Otis, The Strokes). I dug into a little bit of that on this new record but didn’t want to get too far away from pop music yet. I think the next project I’d like to keep pushing the limits and get a little weirder, a little more out, a little more eclectic. I think it’d be super fun to make a record with a live band in a studio for my next project also!
What advice would you give your younger self when starting out in the music industry?
I would definitely tell my younger self that you can’t ever expect anyone to “make your career happen” for you - even if they say they can and want to. But most importantly, I would tell her to make the music that YOU want to make, not what you think others want to hear.
What is your favorite song to cover?
“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones is a song that has meant a lot to me since I was a kid. The lyrics are so beautiful and poignant to me and the melody being so simple really allows room for the emotions to settle in. I love it so much I actually recorded a cover of it that will be on my upcoming album!
When you reach the stage where you have the admiration and respect of other world-known artists, what band or artist would you love to call and say, “Let’s go on tour together”?
My biggest dream of dreams would be to work with Stevie Nicks in some way. I adore her and she’s been such a lifelong inspiration for me, especially lyrically. I think she’s a genius and I would probably pass out if I ever actually got to work with her or go on tour with her.
As humans, we should strive to perform acts of selflessness daily, and many do. Once your artistry has achieved widespread recognition, how would you use your influential voice to make a bigger positive impact on the world?
I would love to have the ability to support other artists, especially women, at the beginning of their careers. I know myself and so many others have dealt with people in the industry being really shady and negative and harmful. I want to cancel that out by doing as many kind and uplifting things for other artists as possible. I wish I had some brilliant idea that would help support artists financially as well- still working on that!
