Begin Interview:
Hello Georgina Reilly, we’re thrilled to have you here for this interview! We've had an amazing time exploring your music and diving into your creative journey. Now, we’re even more excited to get a deeper look into both your brand and your personal and professional inspirations.
What made you choose this track as your first release, and how did it feel to breathe new life into it?
I chose Mr. Blue because I’ve always loved it, and it felt like the right song to reimagine. I initially thought of it as a Christmas gift for my dad, not knowing it would turn into something more. I wasn’t aiming to start a music career at the time—I just wanted to have fun with it. But the process led me to feel that it was the perfect way to share something meaningful and personal with my family.
The original version of Mr. Blue was performed as an acoustic piece. How did you approach adding modern elements while staying true to its nostalgic roots?
Joe Vilardi, my producer, played a huge role in the evolution of the song. He came up with ideas that added layers and depth to the track, while still preserving the original spirit of Mr. Blue. My priority was to keep the song’s simplicity intact because it’s all about the story it tells. The vocals have to be the focus, so I was careful not to overshadow the message with too much production.
When did you realize you possessed such an amazing voice and how does it feel to unveil this with such an amazing story behind it?
Thank you! I’ve always sung since I was a kid, and music was just a part of my life. Growing up in a family full of musicians, I didn’t think much about it at the time. I always knew how much my family’s artistic legacy has shaped me. It’s incredibly special to have this song be the first I’m releasing because of the history behind it.
What was your dad’s reaction when he heard your version for the first time?
It was nerve-wracking to watch him listen to it! He’s an amazing musician, so I really hoped he would like it. He was really touched, though, and happy with how it turned out. I wanted him to appreciate the direction I took with it since it was for him. His reaction meant a lot.
How has your family’s rich musical legacy influenced your journey as an artist?
Coming from a family of artists, I’ve always felt encouraged and supported in my career choices. It was never imposed on me to follow a specific artistic path, but there was always a strong example set for professionalism and the joy that comes with creating art. My parents have always respected and valued the work of artists, which has made it easier for me to pursue my own artistry.
What emotions or themes do you hope listeners take away from your interpretation of the song?
For me, the song speaks about the importance of connection in our modern world. With so many distractions, especially with everyone being glued to their phones, it’s easy to overlook the people around us. Mr. Blue reminds us not to wait too long to appreciate the people in our lives or to speak the things we need to say. It’s about recognizing that there are stories and lessons to be learned from everyone, even in fleeting encounters.
What was it like collaborating with your father during the creative process of Mr. Blue?
I actually worked on the song without my dad’s input until the end. I wanted to get his perspective on some of the final touches to ensure I didn’t stray too far from the essence of the original track. I was glad to know he liked it and felt that it was in the right direction.
How did you and Joe Vilardi develop the sound and vision for this version of the song?
Joe came up with some beautiful work on his own, and I’m grateful for his contributions. The most important thing for me was maintaining the simplicity of the song because the story needs to take center stage. I didn’t want to distract from the message, so we kept the production minimal while allowing the vocals to shine.
How has your time in Canada shaped you creatively?
Moving to Canada was a big transition, but it’s something I’m very grateful for. The Canadian arts community is incredibly supportive, and it felt like a great place to start my acting career. There’s a strong sense of camaraderie, and it’s not as competitive as other markets. People genuinely support each other here. I loved the sense of family within the community, and I think that had a big influence on my creative journey.
How do your experiences as an actor influence your approach to music and performance?
Music actually influenced me first. Growing up, I was always performing—doing 3 shows a day in the living room to nobody. I think every song is like a mini story or film, and I use music to get into character for acting roles. I make playlists for characters, and music is the quickest way to find the beingness of someone, the way they feel or look at the world around them. I’ve always loved musical theater because it combines both acting and singing, and I think that background helps me approach music with a performance mindset, too.
What significance does the timing of releasing Mr. Blue in December hold for you and the song?
I wanted Mr. Blue to be a Christmas present for my dad, which made December feel like the perfect time. The song has that cozy, nostalgic feel, like sitting by the fireplace watching the snow fall. It just felt like the right moment to release it and share it with the world, especially around the holidays.
How important is it to honor your family’s legacy while still expressing your own artistry?
I think it’s important for anyone to honor their family’s legacy. You represent your family name, and there’s something really beautiful about that. I’m proud to come from a family of artists, and I feel very lucky to have grown up in a household where being an artist was a respected and supported career path.
At the same time, my parents never pressured me to follow a specific path—they just set an example of professionalism and joy in art, which made it easy for me to follow my own creative journey. I think that balance is key: honoring where you come from while finding your own voice.
How does your connection to both Los Angeles and Toronto shape your artistic perspective?
Los Angeles and Toronto each have unique qualities that inspire me differently. L.A. has this vibrant energy, there’s so much emotion and excitement in the air. You feel the hope, the heartbreak, and the dreams of everyone around you. The palm trees, the studios, and the constant beautiful weather bring a sense of possibility.
Toronto, on the other hand, feels more intimate. The artistic community here is tight-knit, and there’s a real sense of support. It’s a city where you’re constantly around people, on the subway, walking through the streets, and it’s less isolating compared to the car culture of L.A. I think both cities give me something different creatively: L.A. fuels that big-picture dreaming, while Toronto feels like home and keeps me grounded in a supportive community.
What was your approach to embodying the character of Mr. Blue while recording the song?
The lyrics themselves do so much of the work. I really just thought about what I wanted to communicate about Mr. Blue—who he is, what he feels, and what I wanted to say to him. Once I had that vision, I just let it flow naturally. I think with any kind of art, you can’t think about it and do at the same time, you have to just do it.
Do you see yourself continuing to explore more of your father’s musical legacy?
Absolutely. I’ve already asked my dad if there are more tracks or albums from his past that I haven’t heard yet. It’s such a joy to rediscover his work and imagine new possibilities for it. I’d also love for my dad to write something new, maybe that’s something we could explore together. Joe and I are planning to keep working together, we have an album idea brewing…
