FAWNA’s highly-anticipated second EP, 'Vol. 2', has arrived, delivering an evocative sequel to her breakthrough debut. This six-track project invites listeners into a world shaped by resilience and transformation, where sultry R&B, electronic textures, and introspective storytelling intertwine seamlessly. Vol. 2 builds on the themes of self-discovery and strength explored in her earlier work, offering a soundscape both lush and unpredictable.
Each track takes on its own distinct energy, from the fiery intensity of “Energy,” a bold anthem of independence layered with rumbling bass and sharp production, to the atmospheric warmth of “Flutter,” which wraps its audience in shimmering, dreamlike textures. FAWNA’s unique ability to fuse vulnerability with undeniable confidence creates a sonic journey filled with peaks and valleys, reflecting the artist’s growth and her uncanny knack for turning life’s struggles into artistry.
For fans of genre-defying sounds and lyrical depth, Vol. 2 is more than music, it’s an invitation to explore the beauty of personal transformation. To dive deeper into FAWNA’s creative process, inspiration, and artistic evolution, check out our interview in "The Cage" Music Blog, we are excited to share it with you!
Here’s how it went:
Begin Interview:
Hello FAWNA, we’re thrilled to have you here for this interview! We've had an amazing time exploring your music and diving into your creative journey. Now, we’re even more excited to get a deeper look into both your brand and your personal and professional inspirations.
What inspired the name FAWNA for your artist persona? How does it capture the connection you want to build with your fans?
There’s a couple of different meanings behind my artist name! When I moved from Nova Scotia to Montreal, it was important for me to keep my connection to nature. Deer have always felt like my spirit animal—there’s something about their grace and intuition that resonates with me. So, FAWNA just felt right. The spelling is also an homage to my mom, Shawna, who was one of my biggest supporters. I hope this connection to nature is something I can share with my fans—a reminder to stay grounded and in tune with yourself, no matter where life takes you.
We loved your music video for “Nola.” When we heard the lyrics:
“I’m a reflection of what you don’t like / I hear a different sound”
We wanted to know, who is the object of this message and what do you want them to learn or absorb from it?
“Nola” is a letter to myself and anyone who’s ever been judged for being different or “too sensitive.” At the time, I was being criticized for my vulnerability, as if it were a weakness. Eventually, I realized their criticism wasn’t about me—it was a reflection of their own discomfort with emotions. The song’s message is that we’re mirrors to each other, and often, people’s judgments reveal more about their internal struggles than about us. It’s about trusting your sensitivity as a strength and embracing your individuality, even when others don’t understand it.
With Vol. 2 being a continuation of your debut project, how did your approach to creating this EP differ from Vol. 1?
I’ve grown so much as an artist from Vol. 1 to Vol. 2. The life I’ve lived in between the two projects has completely reshaped my writing and confidence as an artist. For Vol. 2, there was a lot more intention behind the storytelling. The narrative was clearer, and I had a stronger vision of where I wanted to take it. There were more collaborators involved, which refined the sound, but I also had to overcome perfectionism and learn to trust my creative intuition. That was a huge shift for me—letting go and allowing the music to be what it needed to be.
The themes in Vol. 2 focus heavily on self-belief and reclaiming your spirit. Can you share a moment in your journey that inspired this transformation?
It wasn’t a single defining moment—it was a gradual process. Growing up, I was a people pleaser, faced bullying as a child, and lost both my parents as a teenager, which forced me to grow up quickly. I also went through a series of unhealthy relationships before I truly understood my worth. Writing these songs became a way to rewrite my story. I’ve never wanted to be seen as a victim, even though those experiences shaped me. Music helped me transform my pain into empowerment, and I hope it inspires others to do the same.
“Energy" showcases a fiery declaration of autonomy and marks your production debut. What was it like stepping into the producer role for the first time, and how did it shape the track?
Stepping into production felt like reclaiming control over my artistry. I still consider myself a beginner, but it was such an affirming experience to bring something to life from start to finish. Some of the themes in “Energy” are about autonomy and self-reliance, so it felt right to produce the track myself. It pushed me to trust my instincts and gave me a new level of confidence as an artist.
We were so sorry to hear about the loss of your parents. That experience and navigating toxic relationships have clearly influenced your work. How do you channel such deeply personal experiences into your music without losing yourself in the process?
I think the key is alchemy—turning pain into something beautiful or empowering. Writing is how I process and release emotions. It’s therapeutic, but I try to approach it with a sense of purpose. That mindset helps me stay grounded. My goal isn’t to relive the pain but to transform it into something that resonates with others and invites them into their own healing journey.
Your music feels deeply authentic and personal. How do you balance creating for yourself and creating for your audience?
It starts with creating for myself. The songs I write are always rooted in something I’m experiencing or processing. But once a song starts to take shape, I think about how it might connect with others. I believe music is at its best when it’s both personal and universal—it starts with my story, but the goal is to create a space where others can see themselves in it too.
If you could go back and give the version of yourself who made Vol. 1 a piece of advice, what would it be?
Trust yourself more. Stop overthinking and second-guessing yourself. Perfection isn’t the goal—authenticity is. Your work doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.
In a world where the music industry can be demanding, have you ever faced moments where you questioned continuing? What motivates you to push through those moments?
Absolutely, I’ve had moments of doubt. The music industry can be overwhelming, especially when you’re an independent artist trying to juggle everything. What keeps me going is the connection with my fans and the realization that my music is bigger than me. It’s about creating something meaningful that resonates with others. Having a supportive team also makes a huge difference. They hold me accountable, cheer me on, and remind me why I started. I’m grateful to have that.
If you could sum up the message of Vol. 2 in one word, what would it be and why?
I would have to say, "Resilience." This EP is about growth, transformation, and reclaiming your power. It’s a reminder that even in the face of loss or uncertainty, you can find strength and keep moving forward.
