"Awkward Years" by Josh Tavares starts with beautifully rolling, chime-filled guitars that impress. Soft and breathy vocals sit close in the mix, creating an intimate feeling when listening through headphones. We loved this because it evokes the sensation of being in the room with the performance, accompanied by a looming sense of anticipation. When the bass drum kicks in, it creates a calm sensation, accelerating my heart rate like an action movie building to an explosive moment. This is beautifully executed and a massive "win us over" moment.

As the beat intensifies, supported by the arrangement, the harmonies pull to the front and are amazing. They lay bare Josh Tavares's emotions and thoughts on relationships and their value. The ending is unique and head-turning, unlike any song we have ever experienced. I fell in love with Josh's tone and enunciation, believing this singer's unique voice would make big waves in the music industry.

After hearing the song we reached out to Josh Tavres and got to learn so much more! Check out the interview!

Please tell us a little about yourself and when you started making music.

I’m Josh, from Toronto Canada. I’m a TV Producer during the day and a musician by night and I’ve been writing music since I was really young. I was the kid that spent recess in the corner with a notebook while everyone else was playing capture the flag or some other sporty thing, haha.

What first sparked the passion for creating music?

Good question. Honestly, I’ve always been surrounded by music growing up. There was always music playing in my house, and I have a few musically inclined family members I’m close with. It’s just something I’ve always been drawn to and it’s always felt very natural to try to create my own sound.

Can you walk us through your songwriting process for this latest project? Where did the inspiration come from?

I’ve had the title “Awkward Years” in mind for a few years now. I got to the point that I was still very much single and wanted to finally put myself out there. This song is very much about leaving behind the little “flings” of the past and actually taking things more seriously when it comes to romance and stuff.

Where do you create your music, i.e. in a home recording studio or with a producer?

Once I get the lyrics in a pretty decent spot by myself at home and have an idea of what I want it to sound like, I bring in the demos to my producer Aaron Hutchinson who helps me bring them to life. I work with some amazing musicians too, Devon & Ev, who we bring in to add in guitar & strings. Depending on the song, we’ll bring in friends for ad libs, and I always have my bestie Kristi in the corner filming content.

What has been the most motivating force in creating your music?

I have a pretty busy life and sometimes it’s easy to forget about certain feelings I should probably be processing. There are a few songs on my upcoming project that I wrote and was kind of shocked when I listened back. It’s really the best way for me to be honest with myself about things going on in my life which is what keeps me coming back to it!

Where do you see your sound and artistry heading in the future? Are there any exciting new directions you're exploring?

I’ve been working on this project for a few years now, so of course I’ve been antsy to start a new project (which is pretty much written already). Right now, it’s fun to explore with different sounds and different ways of writing. I’d say my writing has gotten a lot more focused and honest in the last year.

Was there ever a time when you emotionally felt, “I can’t do this anymore”? Can you tell us why this happened and how you found the strength to continue?

Literally ALL THE TIME, but my best friend would whoop my butt if I ever actually gave up (talk about motivating forces… lol) It can be pretty discouraging putting yourself out there trying to break through every other artist trying to do the same thing, but I really try not to compare myself to anyone anymore. My biggest successes have come from me doing what feels right for me without overthinking it.

What is your go-to song for Karaoke night?

“Sweater Weather” by The Neighbourhood, or a new goodie is “Please Please Please” by Sabrina.

What is your favorite quote?

Actually from a Taylor Swift song! “Nothing safe is worth the drive.” To be fair, with my driving, nothing is ever safe…

When you become famous, what band or artist would you love to tour with?

Ooooh! Taylor or Billie Eilish would be dream tour-mates. Touring with Glass Animals or AJR would also be ICONIC. I have a long list - and I’m available, so hmu :P
