Louise Goffin’s "What I Love The Most" EP is a masterful blend of emotion, artistry, and innovation.
It kicks off with “Whole Damn Reason,” which captivated us from the start. The gentle opening guitars, paired with hauntingly sustained piano notes that seemed to hang in the air, created a unique and intriguing atmosphere. When the drums entered, they were punchy and direct, adding energy without overpowering the delicate intro. Then Goffin’s voice emerges, soft, gentle, and achingly sweet while imbued with a personal touch that made us feel as though the song was written just for us.
As the song progressed, her voice took on soaring and powerful tones, weaving vivid stories about California. The harmonies elevated the piece even further, transforming it into something bold and electrifying. The interplay between the slide guitars and Goffin’s vocals felt like a stunning duet, as if the instruments and voice were speaking to each other. It was an exhilarating moment that kept us hooked. By the song’s end, Goffin maintains the rhythm with such persistence that it circles in your mind, embedding itself in your memory like a beautiful refrain you can’t stop humming.
The title track, “What I Love The Most,” opens with a steady build of intensity that felt like the anticipation of a roller coaster climbing its first hill, an exciting, almost unnoticed escalation that draws you in before you realize you’re completely immersed. When it reaches its peak, the vocals become hypnotic, exuding confidence and authenticity. The guitars on this track stood out as some of the best we’ve heard in years, dynamic, expressive, and utterly captivating. Meanwhile, the bass lines grounded the sound, creating a cohesive blend that felt fresh and inventive. This song masterfully bridged genres, landing somewhere between folk and disco, yet carving out its own distinct space. Goffin’s talent is undeniable, and her creativity here is simply unparalleled.
The final track, “Dominoes,” was a delightful surprise, a retro homage to the greats of original rock and roll, yet it stood firmly as its own song with a clear identity. The interplay between the slowed guitars and the vocals during the interludes was mesmerizing, showcasing an impressive sense of timing and dynamics. We especially loved the staccato-styled soft drums, which added an understated yet impactful texture. An unexpected but brilliant touch that elevated the arrangement and left us in awe was the violins. The song demonstrated Goffin’s extraordinary vocal and musical prowess, leaving a lasting impression.
