Michelle Lockey released "Who Hears the Broken," an acoustic folk song with a brilliant message of helping those who feel unseen and promoting emotional healing. With incredible vocals, this song immediately fills the air. Powerful and earnest, yet with an air of angst, it prepares your heart for a solemn story. "Young and innocent and wanting everything" beautifully foreshadows what only an experienced mind can appreciate.
The vocals, power, and clarity persist throughout the song, showcasing the singer's breathtaking ability. The gentle yet quick guitar strumming creates an image of a child running across a meadow, laughing and looking back. The amazing harmonies and perfect mixing and production shouldn't be overlooked.
The song is in your mind like chapters in a book, with pages seemingly turning as you listen. Midway, the singer changes to spoken "narration," grabbing your attention. Violins come forward, followed by slow, effortless drum fills that carry the somber yet increasingly powerful message home, allowing listeners to experience the triumph of this little girl.
"Who Hears the Broken" by Michelle Lockey is a beautiful, thought-provoking tragedy-to-triumph story. Stream, share, and playlist this song on your favorite streaming platform today.
Wait, there's more!
We caught up with this exciting and emerging artist in “The Cage” music blog to talk about music and learn more about them.
Here’s how it went:
What first sparked the passion for creating music?
Hearing singers when I was young and family
Can you walk us through your songwriting process for this latest project? Where did the inspiration come from?
The inspiration was from a childhood incident that caused me to look at the world differently. It really affected my ability to believe I could do what I dreamed. I wanted to express that experience and also put some hope in there for others that you can be anything you want to be.
Where do you create your music, i.e. in a home recording studio or with a producer? How do you finalize your finished work, ie. self mixed / mastered or another source?
I work with my songwriter and producer friend, Stephen Joseph Antonelli at Songbuilder Studios. He produces, mixes and masters.
What was the most challenging part of bringing this project to life, from the initial idea to the final recording?
The challenge was making the video, life and health issues, and then finding the time to edit all the shots for the video. I finally hired a video editor.
Is any part of your music's message or purpose overlooked, and if so, what is that element, and why is it so important to you?
I am not sure, the main message is that events in life can really cause us to lose our innocence and how we see the world, but we can overcome them
What has been the most motivating force in creating your music?
Expressing my emotions and life experiences helps heal me and hopefully others
What part of the music making process is the most stressful, ie the creation, the actual release date etc.?
The mixing, My producer and I sometimes disagree and we go back and forth on things. I am also my own worst critic.
If there was one thing you could change about the music industry, what would it be?
Artists get paid more for their music on the streaming platforms.
Where do you see your sound and artistry heading in the future? Are there any exciting new directions you're exploring?
This song was just nominated for a Hollywood Independent Music Award and an Intercontinental Music Award. I went to LA for the Hollywood Independent awards. It was great! I hope to be nominated for a grammy in the future.
Do you play any instruments?
Guitar, ukulele and piano
Please tell us about the last time you performed. Where was the show, and what was your experience?
I play cover gigs. I played at a restaurant and honestly, people were more interested in the sports games that were on than the music. There were some very appreciative people eating dinner and those people are who I focused on.
Was there ever a time when you emotionally felt, “I can’t do this anymore”? Can you tell us why this happened and how you found the strength to continue?
ALL THE TIME. When I realized just how little you get paid for your music, especially when used in a high profile show, the royalties were terrible. It was very deflating. And the gigs where no one seems to care. I just love making music and having that beautiful product out there and using my gifts.
What advice would you give your younger self and why?
Love yourself first. Don't expect others to fulfill your emptiness. Believe in yourself.
What is your go-to song for Karaoke night?
Hotel California!
What is your favorite quote?
"Get busy livin' or get busy dynin'...That's god damn right"- Red - Shawshank Redemption
How do you feel about social media?
While it is good for making connections and staying connected to people, friends and family around the world, it is a time sink, and you can become prone to comparison, however as a musician, it can be a great promotional tool.
What is the most motivating thing a fan or anyone has ever told you about your music?
That my music has helped heal them.
If you could go on any late-night talk show, which would it be? And based on present life, what would be the topic of discussion?
Jimmy Falon, topic: why is everyone so angry all the time
