We had the chance to catch up with Florent Lelong for an exclusive interview in "The Cage" Music Blog.

Here’s how it went:

Begin Interview

Hello Florent Lelong, we’re thrilled to have you for this interview! We’ve had a blast diving into your music and exploring your work, and now we’re even more excited to learn more about you, both as an artist, and as a person.

Is your stage name your given name and what led you to choose this method of connecting your artistry with fans?

That's a great question! I chose not to hide behind an avatar for several reasons. The first goes back to my last project, which was called DeMarty. In that project, I created a character who traveled through time in a retro-futuristic universe. But I ended up trapping myself by focusing too much on building a story around that character and, in the process, drifting away from making music. I realized that the avatar was distancing the audience from the music itself. So for this new album Constellation, I wanted to establish a genuine connection with the audience, especially since it's a deeply personal project, closely tied to my emotions and experiences at the time.

Orion blends multiple genres like electro-pop, deep ambient, and EDM. Can you tell us more about the creative process behind this track? What inspired you to combine these influences?

I wanted to convey, through this track, the emotions and excitement we experience when we're in a state of flow—that feeling of being on the right path, where everything comes effortlessly, and nothing stands in our way. It’s a sense of being in an ultra-positive, fluid mode. The genres I combined—ambient, EDM, and electro-pop—share a common uplifting and positive energy, which is what I aimed to capture in Orion.

Can you share more about your upcoming album Constellation’s and what listeners can expect from it?

The idea behind Constellation is to create a space of freedom for the listener, where they can invent their own stories, feel their own emotions, and imagine their own landscapes through the music. That’s the essence of instrumental music, I believe—it leaves room for personal interpretation. You could think of the album as illustrating the key moments of a day, or perhaps even a lifetime. It takes you through a wide range of emotions—joy, excitement, fear, impatience. Ultimately, it’s the collection of these life moments, this journey, that inspired me to create the album. The title Constellation came to me when thinking about ancient civilizations, who looked up at the stars and saw mythological figures or fantastical animals formed from constellations. In a way, it also reflects the creative energy within all of us—the energy that drives us to dream and to turn those dreams into reality. That same energy, I believe, is mirrored in the stars and space, which is why this album is deeply connected to the universe and the stars. But it’s also about our inner universe. I love the idea that we each have an entire universe inside of us, and at the end of the day, we’re all made of stardust.

You’ve mentioned that Orion offers listeners the freedom to make it the soundtrack to their own story. Is there ever a feeling or experience you hope they have when they listen to this song?

I hope this track gives listeners a sense of energy, motivation, and hope—whether it’s to start their day, go for a run, regain confidence in a project, or embark on something meaningful to them.

We’ve heard that you draw inspiration from a wide range of genres, from classical to urban music. How do these diverse influences shape your sound, and how do you decide which elements to incorporate into your music?

It's a very unconscious process, but as I mentioned earlier, my work is deeply personal. It’s really a reflection of all the influences and the culture we’re all immersed in. It naturally mirrors the things I genuinely love. I enjoy a bit of spice in my music, which can range from classical to urban genres like rap, and even rock. In the end, it’s a global culture, often referred to as pop culture. I think of myself as a kind of sponge, absorbing all these elements, which then naturally come through in the music I create.

You’ve said that for you, sound and sensory immersion take precedence over words. Can you explain a bit more about how you approach creating music from this perspective? How do you prioritize the “feel” of a track over traditional songwriting?

It's closely tied to the nature of electronic music, which is fundamentally about sound exploration. The idea isn’t necessarily to replicate an acoustic instrument, but rather to craft unique sounds—textures you wouldn’t typically hear through traditional means. This opens up an endless field of possibilities. For me, working with electronic music and sound is much like how a sculptor shapes stone or a painter mixes and applies primary colors to a canvas. I'm struck by how this style of music shares so much in common, in terms of creative process, with other forms of art.

We read what you said about wanting to create a “sensory and personal adventure” for your listeners. How do you translate that intention into your music? Are there certain techniques or sounds that help you achieve that?

In many different ways and through various techniques. It starts with sound design, creating a sonic landscape and considering how the sounds evolve over time and their placement within the stereo mix. The tempo also plays a key role, allowing me to express moments of calm or more frantic energy. Additionally, melody and musical composition are essential, the way chord progressions develop can evoke specific emotions and help shape the overall sensory experience.

We’re intrigued by your idea of each track being a stopover on a journey into personal inner universes. Can you elaborate on that concept and how you envision the journey listeners take when they hear your album?

Whether it’s during the grand moments or major projects of life, or even just in the everyday moments, we all experience a wide range of emotions. That’s the journey through our feelings that I wanted to explore and share with this album. I aimed for it to accompany life's moments, allowing each listener to dive in whenever they want and find the track that resonates with their current state of mind.

What are the main challenges you face as a solo artist, and how do the benefits of working independently compare?

I’d say one of the main challenges of being a solo artist is the lack of exchange and collaboration that you might get in a group setting, like during rehearsals where there’s a constant flow of ideas. However, I think that approach doesn’t align as well with the nature of electronic music and sound design. It’s no coincidence that there are many solo artists in this genre. Electronic music is often a very personal, inward experience—it comes from deep within and emerges from the body, unlike genres like rock, which are more about collaboration, friction, and shared creation.

What emotion do you feel inspires your desire to start a project, ie sadness, worry, happiness etc.?

There isn’t a specific emotion that drives me to start a project, but rather a desire to tell a story, much like an author. I’m heavily influenced by the concept album idea, which has been with me since childhood. My earliest musical memories are of Pink Floyd, The Who, and The Beatles' White Album, so I’m naturally drawn to creating albums that are cohesive, conceptual journeys.

Can you walk us through your songwriting process, including where you most prefer to be when you write and create the foundation musical arrangements?

The best moments in the creative process are those moments of revelation. You can spend days or weeks feeling stuck, with nothing really coming together, and then suddenly, while tinkering with an arrangement or a sound, there’s this spark—this moment where everything emerge itself, and you feel like you've found the match. What's striking, at least in my experience, is that once that happens, everything starts to fall into place around a particular sound or melody, and that becomes the foundation of the piece.

Can you describe to us the constellation based theme for your artwork and what was the intention for the observer to absorb from it?

The Constellation album cover was created by two brothers, Samuel and Maxime from the agency C-in Design, who immediately captured the essence of the project. The artwork features deep space with stars in the background, but also these small bubbles—tiny universes orbiting around one another. At the center, there’s a figure floating within their own universe. I thought it was a beautiful representation of the concept I had in mind: a universe that exists both around us and within us.

What instrument do you use as the foundation to start your musical creations with?

I use both analog and software synthesizers as the foundation for my creations. I can spend hours exploring the sounds and textures they generate. These are really the building blocks of my music, like a director working with actors, where each sound enters at just the right moment in the track. Then, other elements come in, adding layers and telling different parts of the story.

Where do you see your sound and artistry heading in the future? Are there any exciting new directions you're exploring?

The next step for this project, and a dream I’m eager to bring to life, is to explore immersive sound. It feels like a natural progression, especially given the focus on creating a deep sonic space. We’ve already worked on a mix with very wide stereo and paid close attention to the spatialization of elements, but in the future, I’d love to explore multichannel sound. My goal is to create experiences with 8 or even 16 speakers surrounding the audience, offering a truly immersive listening experience.

So, what’s next? Can you share the full details on your future projects and what fans should be excited about? We’re hearing about more releases, and we’d love to be the first to announce it!

There are more singles set to be released by the end of this year and early next year, leading up to the full release of the album. There will also be other exciting elements surrounding the project, with different forms of expression. I can’t reveal too much just yet, but I encourage everyone to stay tuned for what’s to come!
