We heard Alex Kate’s "Close To You," and the opening bars were beautifully performed and sung, instantly grabbing our attention. We love the gentle, unresolved but sustained piano, setting the mood with elegance. The opening lyrics are powerfully propelled into the airwaves with incredible power and control by this amazing artist. This song blends elements of classical music and contemporary vibes, creating a magnetic sensation right from the start.
The lyrics run deep and invoke reflection, and when we hear the words, “My mind plays tricks on me, I know in hindsight, I’ll see,” we were stunned. There's also a beautiful twinkling of the pianos that adorns this lovely expression which was magic created by this production team.
Alex Kate possesses a very unique and beautiful vocal tone and styling. There's a soft, breathy quality, combined with a bold vibrato, a balance that’s not common and difficult to accomplish. We really appreciate this level of skill. About a quarter into the song, we hit some incredibly explosive and powerful moments that feel like we're in a Broadway performance.
As the song carries on, there's an incredible wave of emotion and declaration that is empowering to the listener. Alex Kate really knows how to connect with an audience and we can imagine this would be incredible in a live setting. You find yourself fixated on every word, especially as the acoustic guitars come in, trembling yet barreling at the same time, invoking feelings of anxiety but gripping you to your seat. The gentle tapping of drumsticks provides a crisp and clean indication that there's much more to come.
Right in the middle of the song, we transition to storytelling-style vocals with an uplifting sensation. Alex Kate connects deeply to the message and sensation of the song, and it’s impossible not to feel that connection too. The culmination of the song is an incredible orchestra of sound that fills your ears and gives you the sensation of swelling in your heart, especially as Alex Kate sings, “I want to be close to you.” There’s a bittersweet feeling, as if the relationship has since ended. We were truly blown away by the quality and fabric this song possesses. We use the word fabric because this song has texture that gives your eyes a vivid sense of color and creates emotion in your heart. We love it when a song brings our emotions to the surface and allows us not only to connect to the song but to feel riveted to every note and lyric sung.
Written at the start of a relationship, "Close To You" captures those butterflies and the uncertainty of whether it would work out. The relationship has since ended, but the song feels like a beautiful time capsule where Alex Kate remembers that incredible feeling of being in love with this person. In the artist’s own words, "Close To You" is the perfect song to play when your heart and body ache to be near that new love in your life. Whether you're driving away after an intimate moment or walking alone, lost in thoughts of them, this song perfectly captures the raw, tender emotions of falling in love for the first time.
Alex collaborated with LA-based pianist Ty.Rex and producer Daniel Newcombe, who brought the song to life with their magic. The piano-led arrangement, with Ty.Rex’s ingenious piano style, adds a layer of intimacy to the track, while Grammy Award-winning Andy Walters’ mastering at Abbey Road elevates it to a new level. The accompanying music video, filmed in George, South Africa, reflects the emotion and beauty of the song. "Close To You" is the third and final track of Alex’s "Lost Soldier" Ballad EP, a project that's been gaining serious traction with journalists and playlists alike.
